Burn Bans Explained: What They Mean, When They’re Lifted, and What You Should Avoid

Burn Ban Fire Danger
Dry conditions and wind can turn a small spark into a fast-moving fire.

When a burn ban is issued, it is not just a suggestion. It is a response to conditions that make outdoor burning dangerous and difficult to control. During these periods, even a small spark can quickly turn into a fast-moving grass or woods fire.

Burn bans are typically put in place when the combination of dry vegetation, low humidity, and wind creates a high fire risk. Local officials monitor these conditions closely and issue bans to reduce the chances of fires getting out of hand.

A burn ban does not last forever. It stays in effect until conditions improve. That usually means meaningful rainfall, higher humidity, and lower fire danger across the area. Once those conditions return, officials can safely lift the ban.

During a burn ban, all outdoor burning should be avoided. This includes debris piles, brush burning, and any open flames that could spread beyond control.

It is also important to understand that fire risk is not limited to open burning. Activities that create sparks can be just as dangerous. Dragging trailer safety chains along the roadway can throw sparks into dry grass. Equipment such as grinders, welders, and cutting torches can do the same.

Even parking a vehicle in tall, dry grass can start a fire due to the heat from the exhaust system. These are common causes of fires during high-risk conditions.

Residents are urged to use caution with any activity that could generate heat or sparks. Taking a few extra seconds to prevent a fire can save hours of damage and response time.
